Excursion A: Anton Paar and Graz City Trip

The Styrian Company Anton Paar was founded in 1922 as a one-man locksmith's workshop by Mr Anton Paar. Over the past 90 years it has developed into an international high-tech undertaking (active in 110 countries) with 17 subsidiaries, almost 1.600 employees, a worldwide distribution network and an export rate of nearly 96%.

The company's fields of business include density and concentration measurement (both lab and process), rheometry, viscometry, refractometry, polarimetry, material characterization, high-precision mechanics and further chemical and analytical techniques. Since 2003 the company has been owned by the charitable Santner Foundation, which supports scientific work and research of public utility in the field of natural science and technology, the prevention of addictions and the rehabilitation of addicts.

Excursion B: Sappi – Gratkorn Mill and Graz City Trip

Paper has been produced at Gratkorn (Austria) for more than four centuries. Sappi totally revolutionised the mill with the building of the largest and most advanced coated fine paper production line in the world. Gratkorn has an annual capacity of 950,000 tons of triple-coated fine paper on just two paper machines and 255,000 tons of totally chlorine free (TCF) chemical pulp. After extension of Gratkorn’s sheeting plant it now has an annual sheet finishing capacity of 800,000 tons. 

At Gratkorn Mill making quality paper is a way of life.

Gratkorn Mill has an integrated pulp plant, using locally harvested wood from sustainable forest (70% sawmill waste, 30% thinnings) and employing peroxide bleaching technology. Coating materials too are prepared on site.

Using advanced technology, every step in the manufacturing has been designed to provide the highest levels of paper formation, dimensional stability, even-sidedness, smoothness and surface appearance.

New Gallery Graz
Since November 2011 the “Neue Galerie” Graz occupies a large museum building, refurbished to themost modern standards, with an exhibition area of over 2000 square meters. In 1941, the NeueGalerie Graz emerged from the division of the Landesbildergalerie (country picture gallery) intoseparate galleries the Alte and Neue Galerie (old and new gallery), and since then has taken over thepart of the collection that dates from its time of origin in the 19th century to today.

Since the 1960s the Neue Galerie has followed the development of various contemporary artisticpositions, and documented them in its collection. The collection’s holdings today include artmovements like Biedermeier (period between Neoclassicism and Romanticism), Realism, Jugendstil(art nouveau) and (regional) forms of classical Modernity, positions of Austrian and internationalpainting after 1945 (including from the so-called “Trigon” countries), Viennese Actionism, Media andConceptual Art, etc.. The collection has work in different media such as painting, graphic art, posterart, sculpture, photography and video, and contains more than 60,000 objects in total.

A focus within the Neue Galerie Graz is the BRUSEUM, which has a permanent exhibition area andspace for its own collection and research, allowing for scientific investigation into the extensive workof Günter Brus.
